Chutes & Ladders

I recently found this quote written by a friend of mine and it made me happy! “Columbus, GA based duo, Lucy and Bruce Jones, friends in work and life, have quietly worked on a portfolio of candy colored projects with electric palettes and elements of surprise around every corner.  It all adds up, layer upon layer equals brilliant!”

In the words of my husband, Bruce: “Lucy saw that Google had a slide inside their building, so we had to have a slide in ours.”

Let me tell you about this slide!! When the hair brained idea entered my mind, we already had the stairs built inside The Mill, which is the clubhouse at Swallowtail Flats Apartments at Old Town in Columbus, GA, a Southern Living Inspired Community designed by Historical Concepts.

Bruce Jones and the Woodruff Development team were well into construction, so they had to stop the construction, take out the entire staircase and redesign to make this dream a reality!! I thought it was fun, they thought it was crazy, but again, we are in the “YES” business!!

We found a stainless steel slide manufacturer from Oregon, Natural Structures, creative innovations since 1976, (funny fact: the blow pop was created at about the same time). Then, we had to make sure code would allow an apartment complex to have an interior slide, and had architects to redraw. This was our way for Old Town to show its personality, express the fun to come and inspire others with an adrenaline rush!!

My favorite part was picking the color of the slide. I knew exactly which color I wanted: Charms Blow Pop red, an American classic, with just the right amount of sparkle. It was all about high shine & modern metallic!

The slide company sent their color samples our way and we looked at them in all forms of light for about two weeks. It just HAD to be the right shade of red, and it also needed some glitter and sparkle! It ended up being a 100% custom-made color, just for us!! The natural light that enters The Mill makes it sparkle and shine!

The slide was transported across the country to Columbus, GA from Baker City, OR, immediately installed, and there it was; the highlight of The Mill!! A wild vision turned into reality!!

We wanted to create the most unique experience ever in an apartment clubhouse, and I can say, mission accomplished!!

Interior Design by Leigh Olive Mowry of Olive Interiors

We want to give your space a face lift! New ideas created around old fashioned fun?

Marketing and Design with Color design experts will work with you to fit any style and client taste and need.  Yes we love color!! For Lakeside Village, we took an old fashioned car, sliced it in half, and made it into a sofa for the movie room!! Talk about an IDEA!!! We chose yellow for this car to evoke energy, optimism and happiness!! Gotta love white mixed with color— it looks so modern, fresh and clean!

Quick tip: when selecting yellow for your color palette, make sure its bright yellow!! Pale yellow brings out negative feelings of caution, criticism and jealousy!

Justin Gaffrey

I found the Justin Gaffrey gallery while celebrating our anniversary at my favorite place on Earth, 30A!

I loved his persona and his style, tons of color and tons of texture. We had recently moved and I kept thinking I had just the right spot for a new piece of artwork! I sent a palette of colors to Justin in the mail and commissioned the piece you see featured on this post!!

Since then, he has grown and is well known and I am so thrilled to have one of his original pieces. I will never forget the night he arrived in my driveway and the painting was still wet. I loved it so much we hung it right away and it is stuck to the wall!! Justin uses so much glue and his paint being wet made it stick!  I also commissioned his wife at the same time.

Justin is an amazing artist with a very interesting background! He worked in construction, design, and he even worked as a chef!! Justin finally decided he wanted to pursue his career as a full time artist, and to this day, he has toured all over the United States, Ireland and Russia. His work features a floral series, a coastal collection, organic works, still life and steel welded structures.

Justin is Florida’s signature acrylic and contemporary artist!

When I visited his gallery, I could not take my eyes off this painting so I had to have it! Next time you are in 30A, make sure to stop by! I am sure you will find something you will love!!

W Storage

Storage? What can possibly be fun about that? We all haul a bunch of stuff that we don’t even realize we have, or we move, or we just simply need to put our stuff in storage.

At Marketing and Design with Color we always say our way is about making places and spaces fun! And we did. The idea for W Storage came from our idea of making apartment amenities the best & the brightest so our residents would live with us longer. We wanted people to choose W Storage over other storage facilities.

Woodruff Development partnered with our design team and began the project in January of 2014 and had a completely finished 65,000 square foot facility ready for the grand opening in November.

We had such a fun day shopping to decorate W Storage! We visited Tuesday Morning, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Home Goods and then, went and bought an awesome yellow sectional at Lee Industries!! Talk about a packed minivan!! I love my Honda Odyssey! Enough room to fit anything and everything!!

Bonus pic: we were able to fit a chair about as tall as me in my Honda Odyssey minivan!!

For the grand opening, everyone was there! Even Elle, the elephant mascot, who will remind you of all the junk you can store in her trunk!! W Storage is an energetic and modern self-storage facility, that we equipped with leading climate control technology for this Georgia heat, advanced security systems (need to keep our favorite things safe!), and of course FREE STARBUCKS!! Who doesn’t love coffee? I know I do!!

Marketing and Design with Color didn’t just want to develop the usual, boring storage facility… We jumped all in!!

We believe that color changes everything, and with that thought in mind, we designed and developed a state-of-the-art high design lounge, where you can take a break, sit, relax, and surround yourself by all things beautiful and fun!!

Come see high end design by Jonathan Adler and Emporium Home!!

Our attention to detail is in every corner, and you will notice that for the sofas in W Storage, we decided to add our touch of Marketing and Design with Color by using these super fun and quirky pillows by Alexandra Ferguson to remind us to have fun and enjoy the ride, no matter what it is we are doing!! Even the tags on these pillows are awesome!!

Alexandra’s handmade holiday gift project the winter of 2008 was felt appliqued pillows with material made from recycled plastic bottles. They were a blast to make, and pillow recipients were delighted. Not one to ignore a passionate ‘call to action,’ Alexandra opened her business online in January 2009. With a background in fashion, managing sample rooms for some of New York’s top designers, she had the experience and know-how to take a design from concept to production-ready on the showroom floor. It was time to put her unstoppable work ethic behind her own name.

Leftover Paint?

So you just finished painting your bedroom, the downstairs bathroom, the stairs and a tiny spot on the wall… awesome! Now you have all this leftover paint. What do you do with it!?

I found this great idea in HGTV magazine!!

Store leftover paint in clear jars and label them with the room you used it in & the date!

Not only is this a great idea, but the colors look super cute, especially if you have a palette you love!! If you are unsure of how to pick a palette to give your space a little “botox” hire us for a consultation or we can go the whole 9 yards!!

Left or Right? The gas pump question!!

Do you ever find yourself wondering (and hoping) you remember which side is your gas tank on?This sticky situation is especially true when you are driving your spouses or a friends car or a rental car!! Take a minute to look at this picture…

Can you guess which side the tank is on?

The gas pump icon on your dashboard, has a tiny little arrow that points to the gas tank! In my case, the tank is on the left!!

So, next time you pull up to the gas station, take a quick peek at your dashboard and you will know which pump to pick!

Lowcountry Originals

Let me tell you about a favorite vendor of ours— Lowcountry Originals!  I love their story! Lowcountry Originals sprang up during the recession for the need to do something unique and different. It was the creation of Becky Brackett, Lighting Specialist, and Libby Boyden, Interior Designer.

They wanted to come up with light fixtures that did not look like they came off an assembly line. Thus, Lowcountry Originals was born in 2008. All of the work is custom and handcrafted from the first pencil sketch from Lowcountry Originals passed on for production to their artisan metal-smiths out of Savannah, GA. “The Lowcountry” encompasses the area from the northern beaches of Charleston, South Carolina to the southern islands of Georgia. Natural materials used for these unique pieces are oyster shells, reeds, metals in brass, quartz crystals, steel and copper and driftwood. The candle sleeves are made of natural beeswax, copper and steel. The finishes are created specifically for Lowcountry and are inspired by the beautiful earth tones from mother nature!

Check out our oyster shell lighting handcrafted straight from the lowcountry.  Charming Southern Ladies!!!  Lowcountry Originals are featured at Lullwater Apartments above the outside cooking space, the perfect spot for grilling!
